I trained at art school in England the late 70’s and early 80’s, firstly in Fine Art, and then in Textile Design. My work is a unique fusion of those two disciplines.
I have had work exhibited throughout the UK. My work was selected for the ING Discerning Eye exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London in 2015 and it sold at the private view evening. I won a “Work of Excellence” award in 2016, and won “Best Scenic Artist” and “Best Set Designer” awards for a production of The Mikado in 2011. My work is in private collections throughout the world.
I work from a series of sketches and photographs. I use multiple layers of watercolour pencil, blending colours with a fine brush. I draw on both the front and reverse of the fabric to add depth and tone. The pressure of the pencils draws up the surface fibres giving a literal 3-D quality to the image. In this manner I can raise and recede areas of the image. I then “draw” over the completed watercolour using free motion machine embroidery, overlaying thread colours in the same way as the pencil process which adds further depth and texture to the pieces.
I describe my process as “drawing twice” - I draw with the embroidery machine as if the needle was a pencil. The process is the same, it is just the media that changes.
I make commissioned pieces from photographs and discussion about your memories of those places to develop an understanding of the stories behind them, This enables me to encapsulate the emotions behind the image and personalise the work. If you would be interested in discussing a commissioned piece of your house, holiday home, view or special place, please use the email or social media links provided.
